What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is a "fish" text used in typography and design. Lorem Ipsum has been a standard "fish" since the 16th century, when an unknown printer took a typeface and made a selection of type samples on it. The "fish" has not only survived five centuries, but has also taken root in electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularized in the 1960s with the release of Letraset type samples containing excerpts of Lorem Ipsum, and again more recently with computer typesetting programs such as Aldus Pagemaker, which used different versions of Lorem Ipsum.
Why do we use it?
It has long been known that readable content will distract the person who is evaluating the composition of a page. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that this text has a more or less normal letter distribution, unlike, for example, “Here goes the text. Here goes the text.” This makes the text seem like a narrative. Many typesetting and web design programs use Lorem Ipsum as a template, and a search for the term “lorem ipsum” will reveal many websites that are still in their infancy. Various versions of Lorem Ipsum have appeared over the years, some accidentally, some deliberately created (especially humorous ones).
Where does it come from?
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not a random string of letters. It comes from a passage of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, which means it is over 2,000 years old. Richard McClintock, a professor of Latin at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, studied one of the least understood Latin words – consectetur – in a Lorem Ipsum passage, and in searching for the word in classical literature, he found an unmistakable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (“On the Limits of Good and Evil”), written in 45 BC. This treatise on ethics was very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” comes from one of the lines in section 1.10.32.
